This site is devoted to the genealogy of the Peselnick family or, more specifically, to the descendants of Yehuda Leib and Henya Mira Peselnick.  Many of the descendants of Yehuda Leib and Henya Mira later changed the Peselnick name to Purcell.  Peselnick means singer in Russian.  This suggests that the ancestor who adopted this surname in the early 1800's was known as a singer.

Place names referenced on this site are generally shown as they exist today.  For example, Tolochin was part of Russia when the Peselnicks emigrated, but is now in Belarus.

Yehuda Leib PESELNICK and Henya Mira (maiden name unknown) had four children (Isaac, Charles, Philip, and Esther Hinde) who emigrated to the U.S. from Russia.  Yehuda Leib and Henya Mira remained in Russia.  They died about 1917.

Isaac, Charles, and Philip were shown as tailors on the ships' passenger records when they immigrated to NYC as was Esther Hinde's husband, Meyer Sklar.  Many of their children would later be involved in clothing businesses.

Isaac (Yitzhak) PESELNICK was born on 4/15/1874 in Tolochin, Belarus.  Isaac sailed on the S.S. Majestic from Southampton, England on 8/21/1907 arriving in New York City on 8/29/1907.  He died on 12/24/1933 in Brooklyn, NY and was buried in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, Glendale, Queens, NY.  He married Celia (Tzippe) FITLIN (daughter of Shimon FAJTLIN) about 1896 in Mogilev, Belarus.  Celia (Tzippe) FITLIN was born about 1873 in Mogilev, Belarus.  Celia sailed on the S.S. Birma from Libau on 8/3/1909 arriving in New York City on 8/17/1909.  She died on 5/18/1939 in Brooklyn, NY and was buried in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, Glendale, Queens, NY.  Descendants' surnames include Collik, Lucy, Purcell, Silet, Siletchnik, Telzer and Wharton.

Charles (Chazke) PESELNICK was born about 1877 (most likely in Tolochin).  He immigrated on the S.S. St. Louis sailing from Southampton, England arriving in New York City on 7/18/1904.  Charles died on 6/17/1958.  He married Beckie (Basha) GUTKOWITZ (daughter of Meyer GUTKOWITZ and Mira) about 1901 in Russia.  Beckie immigrated on the S.S. Umbria sailing from Liverpool, England arriving in New York City on 5/13/1906.  Beckie died on 4/24/1958.  Descendants' surnames include Wiesenfeld and West.

Esther Hinde PESELNICK was born about 1883 in Tolochin, Belarus.  She married Meyer (Maicha) SKLAR (son of Zeev Wolf Sklyar, alternatively shown as Skliar, Schklar, and Shklyar, meaning glazier or glassmaker in Ukrainian) about 1900 in Russia.  Meyer Sklar immigrated to the U.S. from Krupki, Belarus (west of Tolochin on the road to Minsk) on the S.S. Uranium sailing from Rotterdam arriving in New York City on 6/18/1910.  Meyer died on 4/1/1961.  Esther Hinde immigrated to the U.S. from Tolochin on the S.S.
